In the coastal town of Klitmøller (Denmark’s surf capital, known affectionately as “Cold Hawaii”), two friends are on a mission to get more people out in the waves.
Jacob Lassen and Robert Rohwedder lead the charge at Blue Spirit, a surf school designed to make the ocean accessible to all. At the heart of Blue Spirit is a belief that the ocean is for everyone. Surfing isn’t just a sport here; it’s a tool for freedom, empowerment, and joy. While they offer a surfing and windsurfing classes to anyone, around 20% of those who take a class with Blue Spirit have disabilities, both cognitive and physical.
The team is built around catering for these needs "we have developed special techniques and use equipment that enables a safe and enjoyable surfing experience for everyone. Our instructors are trained to provide personalised and tailored guidance that respects each student’s limitations and potential."
What sets Blue Spirit apart isn’t just their adaptive equipment or safety protocols. It's the commitment to their mission that "surfing is for everyone", building their business around the goal of getting people to experience surfing for the first time.
In a world that often overlooks disabled voices in outdoor sports, Blue Spirit is making new voices heard, ensuring that surfing isn't closed off to those who face different challenges, and the joy and freedom of surfing is available to all.
